One of the Questions I'm Asked Every Week… Do I Really Need a Facial?

If I had a pound for every time someone asked me this question, I'd probably have a very healthy skincare budget!

It's something I hear almost every week.

"Wendy, do I really need a facial, or can I just look after my skin at home?"

My answer is probably not what people expect.

No, you don't need a facial.

But then again, you don't need to have your hair professionally cut, your car professionally serviced or your eyes tested every year either. The question is really about looking after something that's important to you before problems develop.

Homecare comes first

If you came to see me every month but never looked after your skin at home, I wouldn't expect amazing results.

The products you use every day have the biggest influence because they're working for your skin morning and evening, every single day.

That's why I spend so much time talking about skincare routines rather than simply recommending treatments.

So why have a facial?

A professional facial offers something your bathroom can't.

It's an opportunity to properly assess your skin, notice changes you may not have spotted yourself and adapt your skincare as your skin changes through the seasons, with age or because of lifestyle.

Sometimes clients are convinced they have dry skin when it's actually dehydrated.

Others think they need stronger products when their skin is really asking for something gentler.

That's where professional advice can make a real difference.

Skin changes more than you think

One of the things I love about my job is that no two skins are ever quite the same.

The products and treatments that suited you five years ago may not be the right choice today.

Weather, hormones, stress, medication, sleep and everyday life all influence how your skin behaves.

That's why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all skincare.

It's also about taking time out

There's another benefit that people sometimes overlook.

For an hour, you're not answering emails, looking at your phone or thinking about the washing waiting at home.

You're simply giving yourself permission to stop.

Many clients tell me they leave feeling mentally refreshed as well as physically relaxed, and I think that's just as valuable as glowing skin.

My advice?

Don't feel pressured into booking regular facials because someone on social media says you should.

Equally, don't assume they're only for special occasions.

Think about your skin, your goals and your budget.

A good skincare routine at home is always the foundation. Professional treatments are there to complement that routine, not replace it.

The bottom line

Do you really need a facial?

For me, the answer isn't simply yes or no.

If you're happy with your skin and your current routine is working well, that's wonderful.

If you're noticing changes, feeling unsure about which products to use or simply want some professional guidance, a facial can be a valuable opportunity to understand your skin better.

Every person who walks through our door has different skin, different goals and a different story. That's exactly how it should be, and it's why I still enjoy answering this question every single week.
