Why Mature Skin Needs Different Skincare
Why Mature Skin Needs Different Skincare
As we get older, our skin doesn’t simply become “older” — it changes. Its needs change too.
The skincare routine that worked beautifully in your 20s or 30s may suddenly leave your skin feeling dry, tight, dull or more sensitive. Products that once gave you a lovely glow may no longer seem to have the same effect.
This is completely normal.
Mature skin needs a slightly different approach because the way our skin functions changes over time. Understanding those changes can help you choose skincare that supports your skin rather than simply trying to fight it.
What actually changes as our skin matures?
There are several natural changes that take place as we age.
Skin becomes drier
One of the most noticeable changes is often a reduction in moisture.
Mature skin can produce less natural oil, while its ability to retain water can also decrease. This can leave the skin feeling dry, tight or less comfortable, particularly after cleansing.
This is why mature skin often benefits from richer, nourishing moisturisers and ingredients that help support the skin's natural barrier.
Collagen and elastin gradually decrease
Collagen and elastin are important proteins that help give skin its structure, firmness and resilience.
As we age, their production naturally decreases. Over time, this can contribute to fine lines, wrinkles and a gradual loss of firmness.
Rather than expecting a cream to completely reverse these changes, a good skincare routine should focus on keeping the skin well nourished, protected and supported.

Cell renewal slows down
Our skin naturally sheds old cells and replaces them with new ones. This process gradually becomes slower as we age.
The result can be skin that looks less bright and feels less smooth.
This is where gentle exfoliation can be helpful. The key word is gentle. Mature skin doesn't necessarily benefit from aggressive scrubbing or over-exfoliation. Supporting the skin without damaging its protective barrier is far more important.
Skin can become more sensitive
Mature skin can also become more reactive.
You may find that products you previously tolerated suddenly cause redness, dryness or irritation. This is another reason why a simple, carefully chosen skincare routine can often be more beneficial than using lots of strong active ingredients at once.
So what does mature skin actually need?
The answer isn't necessarily more products.
It is about choosing the right products.
A good routine for mature skin should generally focus on four things:
Hydration – helping the skin feel comfortable, plump and moisturised.
Barrier support – protecting the skin's natural barrier so it can retain moisture and defend itself against environmental stress.
Antioxidant protection – helping the skin deal with oxidative stress caused by everyday environmental exposure.
Sun protection – one of the most important steps for protecting skin from premature visible ageing.
And importantly, mature skin still needs to be treated as individual skin. One person's mature skin may be dry and sensitive, while another person's may still be oily, combination or prone to breakouts.
There is no single skincare routine that works for everyone.
Why “anti-ageing” isn't always the best approach
We don't believe skincare should be about declaring war on ageing.
Fine lines, changes in texture and a gradual loss of firmness are all part of having a face that has lived, laughed and experienced life.
Instead of trying to make mature skin behave like younger skin, the aim should be to keep it healthy, comfortable, nourished and radiant.
That means looking at what your skin needs now rather than continuing to use products simply because they worked years ago.
Your skin can still look incredibly healthy
Mature skin can be beautiful skin.
With the right combination of skincare, professional treatments, good nutrition, hydration, sleep and daily SPF, there is plenty you can do to support how your skin looks and feels.
And sometimes the biggest improvement comes from simplifying your routine rather than adding another product to the bathroom shelf.
When should you change your skincare routine?
There isn't a particular birthday when you suddenly need “mature skin” products.
Instead, pay attention to what your skin is telling you.
If your skin is becoming drier, more sensitive, duller or less comfortable, your routine may need adjusting.
Your skincare should evolve as your skin evolves.
At The Haven Spa, we believe skincare should be personal. Your skin, your lifestyle and your goals are unique — so your approach to looking after it should be too.
Healthy-looking skin doesn't have an age. It just needs the right care.
